Although Selena was born in the US, she achieved her greatest success in Mexico, where she had superstar status. She was called the Mexican equivalent of Madonna, and Mexico claims her as one of their own.

Selena, also known as "The Queen of Tejano," was named the "top Latin artist of the '90s" and "Best selling Latin artist of the decade" by Billboard.

This performance at the "Noche de Carnaval" in Miami, in March 1995, was one of Selena's last. She was murdered in Texas by the former president of her fan club just three weeks later, and just two weeks before her 24th birthday.
